CS Council Moves Forward With Embassy Suites, A New Retirement Community, More Student Housing, and Pappadeaux’s

Another large hotel chain received the green light to build in College Station. The council approved a rezoning request for Embassy Suites to build on the north side of University, east of Texas, between Jane and Eisenhower. No timeline was given when construction would begin and when it would open. Developers say it will be a 162 room hotel with a 95 foot tower and a two story parking garage.

The council approved another rezoning request that will lead to a $75 million dollar retirement community along Highway 6 next to Christ United Methodist Church. The owner of the Crestview campus in Bryan, Methodist Retirement Communities (MRC), is planning a campus of 80 independent living, 30 assisted living, and 25 memory support units.

Update from MRC on 9/10/2015:

Plans for the yet-to-be named community initially include 72 independent living condo-style flats, 24 assisted living apartments and 18 memory support suites, with room for future expansion.

For the second time in three months, the city council considered a zoning change request to allow a large student housing projects along Holleman Drive South across from the Saddle Lane and Quail Run subdivisions. While most were opposed when it was first presented, the council approved the Aspen Heights development on a 6-1 vote. Blanche Brick voted no after repeating concerns of traffic congestion. More than 170 buildings, composed of two to five bedroom units that are 20 to 40 feet tall, will be built on more than 28 acres bordered by Holleman South, Harvey Mitchell Parkway, and Wellborn Road.

The council entered an agreement with Pappas Restaurants regarding the conversion of the former Scott & White clinic on University into a Pappadeaux’s. The city will spend $127,340 towards relocating drainage away from the building. The city’s economic development director says Pappas plans to begin demolition within the next 90 days. Pappas’s design process typically takes a year. That would leave about 18 months for construction to be completed by the city’s deadline of February 27, 2018.
