Bryan School Board Approve Expansion Designs at Sam Rayburn, Jane Long, & Harvey Mitchell

The Bryan school board has taken the next step towards three more pieces of the bond issue approved by voters in November 2014.

The board has approved expansions at Sam Rayburn and Jane Long Middle Schools and Harvey Mitchell elementary. Both middle schools will be getting seven more classrooms.

The breakdown at Jane Long includes an art and a science classroom. Sam Rayburn also gets an outdoor cafeteria seating area. That’s something project manager Paul Butterfras said was requested by the principal.

Superintendent Tommy Wallis told the board the decision to add the same number of classrooms at both Rayburn and Long, despite more students being zoned for Rayburn, was due to expected transfers to Long as both buildings become intermediate schools for fifth and sixth grade students.

Mitchell will gain four classrooms and two restrooms, and Butterfras said existing space will also be repurposed.

All three buildings will also get security vestibules.

Like the campus designs previously approved, the estimated costs are within estimates promoted during the bond campaign.
