Blinn College Trustees Approves FY 2020 Budget, Multi-Million Dollar Repairs In Bryan, And Buys Brenham Building For One Dollar

The last Blinn College budget to have the input of appointed trustee members from Brazos County has been approved.

The nearly $120 million dollar budget for the 2019-2020 school year represents an increase of $4.5 million. On the revenue side, Blinn is expecting an additional $2 million in tuition and fees and another $1 million in state funding. The board supported the administration’s recommendation to reduce the college’s contingency fund by $1 million, and reduce funding for the Star of the Republic museum at Washington on the Brazos state park by 70 percent, or $445,000 dollars. Operating expenditures are proposed to increase by $5 million dollars. Three of the five million is proposed to go towards academics and student support.

State lawmakers decided to let terms of two appointed Blinn trustees from Brazos County expire on November 30th.

And reduced funding for the Star of the Republic Museum was the result of state legislation (SB 2309) that transferred operations of the museum to the Texas Historical Commission. Blinn will continue to own the building and contents and will continue to serve as the educational partner, while Texas Historical Commission will secure consistent funding for the museum and bring its expertise to the museum operations.

Trustees approved structural repairs at six Blinn College Bryan campus buildings. The $3.2 million dollar contract, which was $200,000 dollars over the original budget, was after negotiations with the low bidder reduced their offer by $500,000 dollars. Repairing exterior walls and replacing cast stones will be done at the student center, the library, and four academic buildings on the Villa Maria campus. The board decided against a $220,000 dollar option to power wash facades and add masonry sealer to the six buildings.
