Texas Sheriff Sentenced in Drug Chase

McALLEN, Texas (AP) _ A former Texas sheriff has been sentenced to more than five years in prison for helping Mexican drug traffickers smuggle drugs through his border county in exchange for cash.

Former Starr County Sheriff Reymundo Guerra was sentenced Thursday to 64 months in prison and four years of supervised release.

FBI agents arrested Guerra at his office in October. He and more than a dozen others were indicted by a federal grand jury following an operation called “Carlito’s Weigh.”

Prosecutors charged that Guerra made it easier for the Gulf Cartel to move drugs into the United States. He pleaded guilty in May to conspiring to distribute narcotics, though prosecutors termed him a “minor participant.”
