AUSTIN, Texas (AP) _ The Texas House gave preliminary approval Wednesday to an overhaul of the Department of Public Safety.
The state’s top law enforcement agency has been criticized for problems including staffing levels when the Governor’s Mansion was torched last June.
The measure calls for an inspector general to be appointed by the Public Safety Commission to investigate criminal activity, allegations of wrongdoing and crimes on DPS property.
The overhaul also strengthens operating guidelines for the division of emergency management.
DPS has its third director in the last year.
Col. Tommy Davis retired amid criticism over the 2008 fire that severely damaged the historic Governor’s Mansion. So far no arrests.
Col. Stanley Clark took over in September, but resigned last week amid complaints of sexual harassment and unprofessional conduct.
