Status of Current and Future BTU Construction Projects

The Bryan city council this week was updated on a variety of current and future construction projects involving its electric utility.

Among the new items shared by BTU General Manager Gary Miller as part of his budget presentation was a joint project to build a new substation on the Texas A&M west campus. The tentative location is north of the Bush Library along Enterprise Avenue between Research Parkway and Discovery Drive. Construction won’t start until next year. Completion is projected for May of 2017. BTU will make money from charging A&M a fee for the purchase and distribution of electricity to the new substation.

Miller and city manager Kean Register also gave an update on the removal of generators north of the municipal golf course. The city is making a profit on the demolition at the Atkins plant site due to the salvage value, and the city did not have to pay for the removal of asbestos. Miller also said the Atkins site will be housing more BTU employees, who are being relocated from other locations into a $1.3 million dollar building. That’s after BTU spent $890,000 to relocate its warehouse.
