Motorists driving in west Bryan Monday afternoon (May 19) may have noticed police activity in the area of Harvey Mitchell Parkway and West Villa Maria. An employee at a convenience store reported a shoplifter appeared to have a handgun in his waistband. Officers confirmed the shoplifter’s identity through photos the clerk took after she left the store. When the first officer on the scene drew his gun, the shoplifter ran towards the officer, ripped the gun from his waistband, dropped it on the ground, then he laid on the ground. After a second officer fired a bean bag sock at the shoplifter, it was discovered the gun was a butane lighter shaped like a revolver. The arrest report says 27 year old Christopher Vicente Estrada of Bryan, who took a bottle of beer, a package of chocolates, a can of Spam, and a bottle of butane, was arrested on a robbery charge. Estrada, who is in jail for the 16th time since July of 2015, remains held as of May 21st in lieu of a $10,000 dollar bond following his arrest on a robbery charge. Suspects are being sought from gunfire in Bryan Monday night (May 19) south of Santa Teresa Catholic Church. A BPD spokesman says one person was treated at a hospital for a gunshot wound. This is after officers responded to a fight on West 24th Street between residents and several individuals. The suspects left the scene before officers arrived. Bryan police take a report at headquarters from a parent of an elementary school student who was assaulted by another student. A BPD spokesman says this happened Monday morning (May 19) on the playground at Navarro elementary. The victim was taken by their parent for medical attention after being struck by the other student’s hand and feet.
