Brazos County commissioners award a contract to have a study done of staffing at the county jail. The county’s bid document lists 11 tasks of the facility where 186 full time and 14 part time employees oversee more than eight hundred inmates. The consultant is do develop the county calls optimal staffing levels for safety, security, and efficiency. That is to take into account an evaluation of various staff roles and shifts, identify inefficiencies, and develop recommendations that will be implemented in phases. Commissioners unanimously agreed with no public discussion to pay a Dallas company $78,000 dollars. A final report is supposed to be presented at the end of October.

County commissioners also unanimously approved during Tuesday’s meeting, a budget amendment to cover $158,000 dollars in overtime to sheriff’s office employees. There was no public discussion before the unanimous vote to transfer money from the sheriff’s line item for benefits to the line item for salary and wages to what county records say is the “reallocation of funds to correct account for over budget by the end of the fiscal year due to overtime/comp time paid out during the fiscal year.” This follows commission action last week adding almost $820,000 dollars to pay overtime for jail employees through the end of the fiscal year, which is the end of September.
