Action at last week’s meetings of the Brazos County commission and College Station city council included spending millions of dollars to replace radios.
The College Station council at its December 11th meeting had no discussion prior to the unanimous vote to spend $4.1 million dollars to replace 602 handheld and 52 mobile radios.
Background information says public safety radios have not been replaced since 2016 and public works radios have not been replaced since 2019.
Brazos County commissioners at its December 9th meeting held a 30 minute discussion before approving the nearly $1.7 million dollar purchase of 170 radios for the sheriff’s and constable’s offices.
Information technology director Eric Caldwell says the new radios also employ wi-fi and cellular technology that allows communication in places where traditional radio transmission is not available.
Commissioners were also told this purchase was part of a ten year replacement of radios that is estimated to cost $4.6 million dollars.
