Legislation Now in Perry’s Hands

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) _ Texas legislators have banged the last gavel and headed out of the state Capitol.

Now it’s Gov. Rick Perry’s turn to have his say.

Perry is determining the fate of hundreds of bills over the next three weeks and will be the one to decide whether to call lawmakers back into a 30-day special session to address transportation.

In last-minute mayhem, the Texas Legislature adjourned Monday night without passing measures to keep the Texas Department of
Transportation running. Nor did lawmakers issue $2 billion in road-building bonds.

Republican senators said that inaction required a special session to solve. But Perry wasn’t so quick to agree.

His spokeswoman, Allison Castle, said the lack of legislative action will not have an impact on the business of state agencies and that they will keep operating.

Perry has until June 21 to decide whether to sign or veto legislation.
