Edge Community Center Paying Off Back Taxes Six Months Earlier Than Anticipated

Six months ahead of schedule, the Edge Community Center northeast of Bryan will pay off its overdue back taxes, penalties, and attorney fees.

That’s after last Saturday’s return of the center’s political rally, potluck and dessert auction.

The center’s secretary, Dede Bright, says the top seller at the dessert auction was a pecan pie that went for $720 dollars.

The board also thanked the candidates who gave speeches and answered questions.

The center’s new board learned last August that the property lost its tax-exempt status in 2011 and there was an overdue bill of more than $7,500 dollars.

In addition to this week’s payoff, which according to state law cannot be changed, the center’s board has been working to reinstate its tax-exempt status.
