Since the late 1940’s, those living in the Edge community northeast of Bryan have had a meeting place.
While there is renewed interest at the Edge Community Center, the new board of trustees is working to resolve a more than $7,500 dollar property tax bill.
Trustee Bart Corgey says for whatever reason, the Brazos Central Appraisal District started issuing valuation notices in 2011, followed by tax bills from Brazos County.
But Corgey said all the mail went to someone who has not been involved in the center in 30 years. And that person did not forward the valuation notices or tax bills.
Corgey says they are working on renewing the center’s tax-exempt status.
As for the prior years, Brazos Central Appraisal District chief appraiser Mark Price says state law does not allow the center to prove in past years they were tax exempt.
But as of August 1, the center owes almost $4,500 dollars in taxes, another $2,100 in penalties and interest, and almost $1,000 in attorney fees.
Corgey says the center might have $1,000 dollars. The board is exploring fundraising options.
