Design of College Station’s New Police Headquarters Is Awarded After Lengthy City Council Debate

The College Station city council took the better part of two hours Thursday night debating a nearly $2 million dollar contract to design the new police department headquarters.

Blanche Brick continued her attempt to move the site from next to Central Park.

Dr. Brick was joined by five of six public speakers who also supported leaving that acreage available for future park expansion.

James Benham made the motion to approve the contract.

Mayor Nancy Berry seconded the motion. Also voting yes were John Nichols and Steve Aldrich. Brick voted no, and Karl Mooney and Julie Schultz were absent.

Before the vote on the main motion, Aldrich attempted to defer action until the second meeting in March. That failed on a 3-2 vote, with Brick joining Aldrich and Berry, Benham, and Nichols voting no.

The design of the new campus is expected to take the balance of this year, with construction starting next year and completion in 2018.
