December’s meeting of the College Station city council included unanimous approval to a more than $2.1 million dollar construction contract for a new building serving the city’s cemeteries.

The cost is $445,000 dollars more than originally authorized in May of last year.

$395,000 dollars of the additional cost will be covered by a loan from the city’s general fund.

City manager Bryan Woods told the council they will be discussing in January, the possibility of increasing cemetery lot fees to cover the loan. That’s because current cemetery revenue will not cover the loan.

Councilwoman Elizabeth Cunha offered spending money from the city’s unassigned reserve portion of the general fund as an alternative to raising lot fees.

It will take about one year, weather permitting, to build the 4,100 hundred square foot structure at the Aggie Field of Honor cemetery near Easterwood Airport.
