Action at this week’s Bryan school board meeting included awarding a nearly $1 million dollar contract to convert two buildings at the site of the district’s new career and technology education (CTE) complex.
Construction is supposed to start in a few weeks and be completed by the end of July, in time for the first Bryan and Rudder High students to start classes in construction, welding, robotic manufacturing, and automotive trades.
BISD’s project director, Paul Buckner, said there was enough money in the budget to add a security vestibule in one of the buildings. When asked about adding a fence around the perimeter of the 119 acre property, Buckner said that might be a future project for welding students.
The board also accepted a $50,000 donation from the Bryan Business Council towards the purchase of a robotic arm that will be used by students. BISD chief of staff Ginger Carrabine the equipment was recommended by local industries for training purposes.
The board will be receiving another $50,000 from the Brazos County commissioners court. The contribution was unanimously approved on Tuesday following a presentation by BISD’s CTE director David Reynolds. According to Reynolds’s presentation, BISD is looking towards outside donors to pay for $392,000 dollars in equipment. According to additional information presented to the county, the district’s total need to furnish the center is more than $881,000 dollars.
