Bryan Mayor Says There’s Interest In A New Animal Shelter

The Bryan city council’s annual update of activity at the animal center included comments from the mayor about the possibility of a new shelter.

Jason Bienski says he’s been approached by potential donors of what is estimated by staff to be a facility costing between $3.5 and $4 million dollars.

During Tuesday’s council workshop, Bienski said “I am aware of certain foundations, organizations, and individuals that would help with the fundraising for a new animal center only…in a new location.”

Bienski also said “It could be land donated, facilities donated, or money donated to help with this…I think time is of the essence if we want help from the private sector and from individual contributors and benefactors then that might be something we want to look at and maybe leverage with them.”

As Bryan completes its fourth year operating its own shelter on Finfeather, staff was congratulated for reducing the euthanasia rate from 80 to 23 percent and returning nearly 200 dogs and cats to their owners instead of taking them to the animal center.
