The Bryan city council approves a contract to hire private security guards at Midtown Park.

This follows vandalism in September 2023 where one of the park’s entrance signs was removed February 26th for repairs.

A city spokeswoman tells WTAW News that the damage is believed to be the result of people hitting golf balls across Villa Maria from the backyard of a home. The vandalism was the subject of a council discussion behind closed doors during their April 9th meeting, to receive legal advice about the incident.

When repairs are completed and weather conditions allow, the sign will be re-installed.

In open session, the council awarded a $133,000 dollar contract for private security guards to patrol Midtown Park each night between nine p.m. and six a.m. The council was told the contract is with the parks department.

The council authorized private security as part of approving the fiscal year 2024 budget, which took place before the sign was vandalized.
