The May regular meeting of the Blinn College board of trustees began with recognizing two Washington County members who retired following a combined 51 years of service to the elected body.
David Sommer’s eight years included his time as chairman when the decision was made to stop construction of a new Brazos County campus at FM 2818 and Leonard Road and expand at the Texas A&M system’s RELLIS campus.
Atwood Kenjura’s 43 years includes the establishment of Blinn’s Bryan campus on Villa Maria.
Replacing Sommer and Kenjura are Brenham businessman Jim Kolkhorst and retired Blinn administrator Dennis Crowson. Re-elected as board chairman was Charles Moser, while Kolkhorst was elected vice-chairman and Teddy Boehm was elected board secretary.
Without discussion, the new board agreed to lease space from the A&M system at A&M’s veterinary college to expand Blinn’s vet tech program.

Chancellor Mary Hensley provided an update on this summer’s opening of Blinn’s health sciences program and new faculty offices on the RELLIS campus.
The board awarded a nearly $1.2 million dollar contract to build a new agriculture building in Brenham.

The first meeting of the newly reorganized board included no comments about the future composition of the governing body. Nothing was said by trustees or administrators about the appointment of two Brazos County members coming to an end November 30, or the idea of expanding the elected body by adding Brazos County to the college’s tax base.
