Another Attempt Being Made For Sidewalk In West Bryan

Bryan city councilman Rafael Pena is in his third year of attempting to get a sidewalk built from the intersection of Highway 21 and Sandy Point Road, west to the Forest Park apartments…across the street from the Brazos County detention center.

After failed attempts to convince private property owners to donate land, Pena wants to spend $450,000 dollars that is not in the budget to build approximately 1,000 feet of sidewalk. It would be part of a larger project proposed by the Texas Department of Transportation.

Before the council voted to postpone action, Pena says he found $500,000 dollars in savings from other projects.

Public Works Director Jayson Barfknecht pointed out the council just rejected bids on two other things because the costs came in higher than expected.

The city would be required to pay 25 percent of TxDOT’s $1 estimated construction plus design costs to widen Sandy Point…also known as FM 1687…and add sidewalks, curbs and gutters, and drainage.
