Aggieland Humane Society Suggestions For Those Getting Pets As Gifts

Aggieland Humane Society has suggestions for those getting and adding pets to their household during the holidays.

Speaking on WTAW’s The Infomaniacs, operations supervisor Leiha White says the general rule with new pets is they are going to need “a couple of days to just completely decompress, three more weeks to learn the routine, (and) three months before they’re comfortable.”

As for introducing a cat into a home with a dog that loves cats, White says “cats don’t know that.” That’s why the cat hides under the bed. White says to set up cats “with space where they can be comfortable on their own while they are adjusting.”

And when a second cat is introduced into a home, place a second litter box in a different location. White says they “see lots of cats resource guard their litter box and don’t let the new friend even near it.”
