Bryan City Council Sees FY 16 Budgets

The Bryan city council liked what it saw when next year’s proposed budget was unveiled this week.

Councilman Mike Southerland stunned city manager Kean Register and mayor Jason Bienski with his endorsement of spending $4 million dollars next year from reserves on parks and public safety.

Southerland was referring to the million dollar skatepark, the nearly million dollar pool replacement at Sadie Thomas Park, another million split between repairs at the Bryan Aquatic Center and other parks, and $800,000 for six more firefighters, three more police officers, and equipping all officers with body cameras.

The council had no interest in changing the tax rate. That means most property owners will pay more due to increased valuations.

Next year marks the second year of a BTU rate increase, while there will no increase in water and trash fees.

The tentative date for the public hearing on next year’s Bryan city budget is August 25th.
