The Bush Library and Museum pavilion was the setting Tuesday (February 3) for a national recognition of the new president of the Brazos Transit District.
Wendy Weedon, who has been with the district for 18 years, was presented the Four Chaplains Memorial Foundation’s humanitarian award.
The foundation was established after four chaplains died during World War II trying to save 902 onboard the Army troop ship Dorchester that sank after it was hit by a torpedo fired from a German U-Boat.
A news release cites Weedon’s work with veterans that includes creating the Brazos Valley Veterans Express van fleet to transport veterans and their spouses to their appointments and assisting the Brazos County veteran services office (VSO).
The news release is from foundation’s regional director, Ellen Fuller, who leads the local Wreaths Across America program.
Presenting the award was VSO director Pamela Robertson. On the VSO’s Facebook page, Robertson said “This award is rooted in integrity, courage, and selflessness and Wendy exemplifies all of these, along with a truly big heart.” Robertson received the Four Chaplains Award in 2025.
News release from the regional director of the Four Chaplains Foundation Ellen Fuller:
Tuesday, February 3rd marks the 83rd anniversary of the sinking of the U.S. Army troop ship, Dorchester, where the Four Chaplains perished trying to save the 902 souls aboard. Their selfless service impacted 230 survivors and our Nation!
2025 marks the 75th anniversary of The Four Chaplains Memorial Foundation and the Chapel of the Four Chaplains. In 1951, President Harry Truman dedicated the Chapel, which is located at the Navy Yard in Philadelphia. It was created to encourage and recognize individuals and organizations for acts of selfless service and interfaith cooperation.
Honoring the selfless service of its namesakes, The Four Chaplains Memorial Foundation will host a special recognition of the contributions of Wendy Wooden, CEO of Brazos Transit, on Tuesday, February 3rd, at the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum.
Wendy began her career in public transportation in 2008 when she joined Brazos Transit District (BTD). As CEO, she leads public transportation services across 20 counties in Central and East Texas, ensuring access to safe, reliable, and equitable mobility for thousands of residents. Her leadership philosophy centers on service to others, excellence in customer service, investment in infrastructure, and the development and support of quality employees through training and professional growth. She consistently emphasizes that public transportation is not merely a service, but a lifeline for communities, individuals, families, Veterans, seniors, and those most in need.
Under Wendy’s leadership, Brazos Transit District has received significant recognition, including the Federal Transit Administration Region VI Transit System of the Year Award in 2022 and the Texas Transit Association’s Outstanding Urban Transit System of the Year Award in 2025. These honors reflect not only organizational excellence, but also Wendy’s steady, values-driven leadership and commitment to the communities BTD serves.
In 2022, Wendy coordinated the donaon of two BTD vans, with ADA-access, to Brazos Valley Center for Independent Living (BVCIL). She worked with volunteers from Wreaths Across America Brazos Valley, Brazos County Veterans Service Office, Brazos Valley Marine Corps League and VFW Post 4692 in Bryan for the creation of Brazos Valley Veterans Express (BVVE) vans for appointments for Veterans and their spouses.
Wendy has also overseen the operation of the Charlie Wilson Veterans Affairs Shuttle in Lufkin, Texas, a role that reflects her deep respect and lifelong appreciation for Veterans.
She firmly believes that transportation, or the lack of it, should never be a burden for those who have served our country.
For her unwavering commitment to service, leadership rooted in integrity, and compassion for all those she serves, particularly Veterans and underserved populations, Wendy was nominated and selected for the Four Chaplains Legion of Honor Humanitarian Award.
