The state prison system received a record $360 million dollars from the legislature for construction projects during the 2024 and 2025 fiscal years.

An update on how that money is being spent during December’s state prison board meeting included comments from director Bryan Collier. He said “the way we continue getting that funding (from the legislature) is showing that we put it to work, we get it spent, we get it spent on what they told us to spend it on, and we make it work.”

In the Brazos Valley, facilities director Ron Hudson brought up the Luther and Pack units in Grimes County received new water wells and new wastewater treatment plants…which were among $6.5 million dollars spent on 44 utility projects around the state.

Prison board members were also told about $31 million dollars going towards adding air conditioning to more cells, which includes the Luther Unit. Hudson said when completed, there will be air conditioning for 62,000 inmates at 45 units.

The update also included replacing fire alarm system and converting to electronic security fencing to move those corrections officers inside prison buildings.

Hudson said since September 1st 2024, the prison system has had 386 construction projects totaling $77 million dollars. That compares with $45 million dollars spent on about 1,088 projects during the 2018 and 2019 fiscal years.
