The Texas A&M system board of regents on Thursday, approved four construction projects affecting the flagship campus.
The list includes a $5 million dollar railroad quiet zone along the tracks parallel to Wellborn Road. $500,000 dollars will be budgeted right away for pre-construction and related project costs. A&M administrators say train engine horns are adversely impacting educational and research activities, and for those staying at the new hotel and conference center. Administrators also say Union Pacific is increasing the number of daily trains in the next five years from 24 to nearly 50.

The largest of the four projects is in Houston for the health sciences center (HSC). A $109 million dollar biomedical research building would be located on a 37 acre site at the Texas Medical Center. Administrators are promoting this as a premier research campus for biomedical innovation and commercialization, housing and showcasing world class research, and creating a worldwide market for research talent and private venture capital.
