Bryan School Board Frustrations That Rules Are Still Not Ready For New State Mandated Training

School districts around the state continue waiting for the Texas Education Agency (TEA) to develop the rules for 80 hours of new training that kindergarten through third grade teachers and administrators are required to pass by 2023.

Last month, College Station school board members heard frustrations of their administrators with the legislature’s mandated and TEA administered reading academies.

Similar frustrations were aired at this week’s Bryan school board meeting by superintendent Christie Whitbeck and by board members.

The board’s vice president, Julie Harlin, called for contact state lawmakers who passed the rules as part of House Bill three earlier this year.

Dr. Whitbeck says they are committed to making this as painless as possible for teachers.

The cost to train 462 K through third grade teachers and administrators in Bryan ISD could be as high as $1.2 million dollars.

Among the TEA rules that have been set is that those who went through an earlier version will also have to complete the new training.
