In College Station ISD, superintendent Clark Ealy told his school board the first round of training applies to 350 teachers and administrators of kindergarten through third grade students.
The outcome of the training, which is supposed to start by next summer, is to develop a curriculum to teach core reading and writing skills to K through third grade students.
Chief academic officer Penny Tramel has a huge concern about the Texas Education Agency’s outline for the academies.
The board was told a wild guess of the cost is $1 million dollars. While the legislature increased public school funding, Tramel brought up the possibility of CSISD providing training districts to generate some revenue.
School districts will also be required to create reading academies applying to fourth and fifth grades and to sixth through eighth grades.
