A staff recommendation at the Texas Sunset Commission to close 87 Department of Public Safety (DPS) offices has resulted in the commission receiving two letters from some state lawmakers opposing the idea.
State representative Trent Ashby’s district would see the closure of the Centerville office and reducing the Madisonville office to one county employee.
Ashby says it doesn’t make sense to force those having to get drivers licenses to drive another 30 to 40 miles one way to already overcrowded DPS offices.
Ashby also says it would mean for travel for DPS troopers.
The recommendations, which have not been considered by the sunset commission, also affects three other DPS locations in the Brazos Valley. Staff in Caldwell and Marlin would be reduced to one county employee and the office in Fairfield would be closed.
Staff recommendations also includes urban locations…closing one of Fort Worth’s DPS offices along with Galveston and San Marcos, and reduce the staff at the DPS office inside the state capitol.
