ORLANDO, Fla.- Texas A&M’s women’s golf tied a 36-hole school record with a 12-under par score after the second of three rounds of the prestigious Annika Intercollegiate, and sits in second place after play on Monday.
“We hung in there today,” said Texas A&M head coach Trelle McCombs. “The girls didn’t feel like they played that great, yet we still shot an under-par round.”
“Callie Scheffler did a great job for us today,” added McCombs. “I am so proud of how she is progressing.”
The Aggies shot a 2-under 286 on the Reunion Resort’s Watson Course on Monday, posting a third straight under-par round. A&M trails only tournament leaders No. 3 Southern Cal, who is 29-under for the tournament. The No. 11 Aggies are in front of five of the Top 6 teams in Golfweek’s preseason rankings, including No. 1 Duke and defending NCAA Champion, No. 2 Stanford.
The Aggies’ 12-under score through 36 holes matches the best total in school history, set just two tournaments ago at the 2015 NCAA San Antonio Regional. A score of 1-under or better in the tournament’s final round would tie the Aggies’ 54-hole record, a 13-under set at the 2015 SEC Championship.
Callie Scheffler shot a collegiate career-best for the second straight day, firing a 4-under 68, bringing her to 139 (-5) for the tournament and a tie for seventh place. Scheffler’s 5-under total through 36 holes matches the fourth-best total in school history. Southern Cal’s Robynn Ree leads the tournament with a 134 (-10) after two rounds.
Defending SEC Champion Bianca Fabrizio is tied for 12th at 141 (-3) for the tournament after a 73 (+1) on the par 72 / 6,245 yard course. Maddie Szeryk shot an even-par 72 to remain 2-under for the tournament and is tied for 17th.
Andrea Jonama is tied for 29th in the tournament with a 145 (+1), after shooting a second-round 76 (+4). Thanya Pattamakijsakul shot a 73 (+1) and is tied for 44th with a 148 (+4) for the tournament.
Three of A&M’s four rounds this season have been under par, marking the first time in school history that the Aggies have started the season with three below-par rounds in four tries. The Aggies are a combined 19-under for the season, and entered the tournament with the nation’s best stroke average.
Texas A&M tees off for the final of three rounds at 7:50 a.m. CT on Tuesday.
