DALLAS (AP) _ Extremely critical conditions fueled wildfire flare-ups in the South Plains and Trans-Pecos of West Texas.
The so-called Gage Holland fire west of Alpine prompted Brewster County Sheriff Ronny Dodson to evacuate a subdivision west of the city limits and close U.S. 67/90 between Alpine and Marfa.
Temperatures there topped 90 degrees with winds of 10 to 15 mph and humidity readings of 1 percent, making for explosive conditions in the area. Trans-Pecos Fire Complex team spokesman Ed Brown says no structures have been lost and the fire was being fought from the ground and from the air.
Meanwhile, firefighters battled the 35,000-acre Dickens County Complex of wildfires about 70 miles east of Lubbock, where winds gusted to 30 mph with humidity readings of 1 percent and temperatures approaching 100 degrees.
