West Texas Cop Critical After Shooting

SNYDER, Texas (AP) _ Residents of a small West Texas town gathered outside the town’s courthouse to pray as a police officer fights for his life after he was shot in the head.

The Tuesday night prayer vigil outside the Scurry County Courthouse in Snyder appealed for the life of Snyder police Cpl. Darrell Campbell. He was in critical condition in University Medical Center in Lubbock after the Tuesday morning shooting. Another officer shot and killed the gunman, whom police identified as Dwayne Birmingham.

Amy Sartain is a close friend of the wounded officer’s family and is caring for Campbell’s two children while his wife maintains her hospital vigil. Sartain tells KCBD-TV of Lubbock that the crowd gathered to support a man who had protected them for years.
