A utility truck driving in tall grass in west Bryan Friday afternoon got stuck, then got into real trouble.
Deputy Fire Marshal Fred Taylor says near the intersection of Mumford Road and Harvey Mitchell Parkway, the truck’s catalytic converter ignited the grass.
Taylor says the driver, who was out in the field to make repairs to a fiberoptics line, threw out as much equipment as he could from the burning truck…but the grass fire consumed it all.
The driver, from out of town, was not hurt.
Taylor says it took firefighters from three engines 30 minutes to get the fire extinguished.
Police were called out to direct traffic on Harvey Mitchell.
Taylor says 2 1/2 to 3 acres of land along the right of way was burned. No structures were threatened.
