The Bryan city cemetery’s celebrated its 150th anniversary Wednesday with a look back and a ribbon cutting that opens space for the future.
Henry Mayo of the Brazos County historical commission was the featured speaker.
Dr. Mayo noted it’s the final resting place of at least two ambassadors, presidents of what was Texas A&M college, and a knight who built the building that is now the historic Queen theatre.
Bryan mayor Andrew Nelson also spoke at the anniversary program, which was followed by a ribbon cutting that opened a 19 acre expansion.
What is now an 85 acre cemetery began in 1863 with 20 acres of land that was purchased for $100.
The podcast below includes comments from cemetery sexton Bob Holmes, Bryan mayor Andrew Nelson, and Dr. Henry Mayo of the Brazos County historical commission.
