Veteran Radio Announcer Passes Away

A man synonymous with local radio in the 1950s and 60s has died.

Alexander Joe Winn — better known as “A.J.” — was a longtime disc jockey and radio personality at WTAW when the station played country music.

Winn worked for WTAW from 1947 to 1966 and was named the Country Music Association’s D-J of the Year in 1954.

A-J was personal friends with many country music legends, including Willie Nelson, George Jones, Hank Williams Senior, and even Elvis Presley.

He died Wednesday.

Graveside services are pending at Gum Springs Cemetery in Flynn.

A-J Winn was 94.
