News release from the Texas A&M System:
Texas A&M University System Chancellor John Sharp today announced a five-year, $4.35 million contract that will bring Kyle Field’s ground-breaking wireless network to Verizon customers.
“Kyle Field’s new communications network is designed to make Aggie fans the most connected anywhere during games and to give them the best game-day experience possible,” said Chancellor Sharp.
Verizon is the second wireless carrier to contract with The Texas A&M University System to improve game-day service for their customers. Under the contract, Verizon will pay $4.35 million over five years to be part of the Corning ONE™ fiber network that will serve its customers on game days at Kyle Field. AT&T Mobility signed on last year. When fully implemented, the network will allow more than 100,000 people to make phone calls, text or access in-game apps simultaneously.
“Aggie fans are avid users of Verizon technology, sharing photos, videos and texts before, during and after games,” said Keith Gladhill, president, Houston/Gulf Coast Region, Verizon Wireless. “Verizon’s multi-million dollar investment at Kyle Field demonstrates our commitment to our customers at Texas A&M University and ensures fans the best possible wireless experience during football games and beyond.”
The Corning ONE™ fiber network — installed by IBM — is leading a national trend of communication upgrades for major stadiums, both at the collegiate and professional level. It includes more than 1,800 antennas and serves more than 1,000 television screens around the stadium.
There also is a practical purpose for using fiber optics as opposed to the traditional copper system. As the demand for bandwidth grows, it will be less expensive and easier to expand the network.
Kyle Field will re-open with the first home game on September 12, following a $485 million renovation.
