UT President Speak Out on Higher Education

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) _ University of Texas president William Powers is again speaking out amid the escalating debate over higher education in the Lone Star State.

Powers was scheduled Monday to deliver a speech on the UT campus about curriculum reform, teaching effectiveness and research. The issues have come to the forefront after the University of Texas system last month removed a special adviser who questioned the value of research in higher education.

State lawmakers have also apparently taken notice. House Speaker Joe Straus and Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst announced last week they had formed a joint oversight committee aimed at ensuring transparency and best practices at Texas colleges and universities.

Power’s speech comes days before the UT System Board of Regents is scheduled to meet later this week.
