AUSTIN, Texas (AP) _ The University of Texas is shutting down the Cactus Cafe, the famed campus venue where Lyle Lovett and others started their careers.
The Austin university is also cutting its decades-long program of informal classes that allow area residents to learn various subjects and skills for a nominal fee. UT officials say the cafe
and the classes are victims of budget woes and will end in August.
Andy Smith is executive director of the University Unions. Smith tells the Austin American-Statesman the cuts will save about $122,000 a year.
Both programs were supposed to be self-sufficient. But Juan Gonzalez, who is vice president of student affairs, says neither has been for years.
The decision to end the programs came Friday.
