UT Announces Study on the Future of the Jefferson Davis Statue

DALLAS (AP) _ The University of Texas will establish a panel to determine what to do with a statue of Jefferson Davis that student leaders have asked to be removed from the Austin campus.

UT President Greg Fenves said in a statement Tuesday that a committee of students, faculty and alumni will explore options for the statue that Fenves will consider.

He says Gregory Vincent, vice president for diversity and community engagement, will head the committee.

Vandals early Tuesday sprayed graffiti on the pedestal to the century-old statue of the president of the Confederacy, and an online petition recently was launched to have it removed and placed in a museum.

But Davis’ great-great grandson, Bertram Hayes-Davis, says his ancestor was a statesman with a broad list of accomplishments who’s being unfairly demonized.
