TEMPLE, Texas (AP) _ Authorities say a Central Texas police chief who was shot just over a week ago while working an off-duty security job at a bar in Temple has died.

Temple police say Darrell Allen, the chief in the town of Marlin, died Tuesday afternoon. His body was then taken with a police escort to Dallas for an autopsy.

Authorities say Allen was shot while trying to detain 24-year-old Derrick Wayne Gamble at the bar on Nov. 1. Gamble remained in the Bell County jail on Tuesday on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. His bond is $750,000. Jail records don’t list an attorney to speak for him.

Allen had been chief in Marlin, a town of some 6,000 about 30 miles northeast of Temple, since 2009.
