Update:

A 21 month old Bryan boy who sustained a brain injury Tuesday morning while his mother was at work has died.

The mother’s boyfriend, who was arrested for reckless injury to a child, remains in jail.

Bryan police report the Brazos County district attorney’s office will likely revisit criminal charges against 22 year old Alexis Balleno when the case is presented to a grand jury.

According to the arrest report, Balleno told detectives he tossed the toddler in the air in an attempt to quiet the child when the boy’s head struck the back of a couch and landed on the floor.

As the child continued crying, Balleno said he shook the youngster for about ten seconds, causing his head to flop.

Original story:

A 21 month old Bryan boy is hospitalized in Houston in critical condition with a brain bleed, and the mother’s boyfriend was arrested by Bryan police on a charge of reckless injury to a child.

Officer Kelley McKethan says the case began as a response to a 9-1-1 call where the boyfriend was administering CPR to the toddler.

According to the arrest report, 22 year old Alexis Balleno told detectives he was trying to quiet the child by tossing him in the air.

Instead of catching the toddler, the boy’s head hit the back of the living room couch then the floor.

Balleno said the child continued crying so he shook him for about ten seconds, causing his head to flop.

Balleno is being held in the Brazos County jail in lieu of a $100,000 dollar bond.
