HOUSTON (AP) _ The University of Houston says a campus police officer was killed after being involved in a one-car accident on the way to a possible crime scene.
Ann O’Donnell was responding to a report of an assault at a fast-food restaurant near the campus when her cruiser struck a tree about 1 a.m. Friday. She died while being transported to Ben Taub General Hospital.
Department spokesman Bret Collier says the 24-year-old O’Donnell is the first UH Department of Public Safety officer to die in the line of duty.
Chief Malcolm Davis says O’Donnell joined the department in September 2009.
The Houston Chronicle reports that Houston police are investigating the accident.
