College Station City Council Directs Staff To Proceed With Adding Baseball Fields At Veterans Park

College Station city council members express no opposition to adding three baseball fields at Veterans Park. This follows construction coming to a halt at Texas Independence Park…originally named Southeast Park off Rock Prairie Road…due to soil conditions. The council was told soil testing continues on the Veterans Park property by a company that is not the one who conducted tests at Texas Independence Park, where construction was stopped after the city spent more than $5 million in infrastructure. Staff told the council the infrastructure that was built at Texas Independence Park will be used. At Veterans Park, the council was told that if additional fields are built near the University Drive entrance, it would three or four years before construction is completed. The council was also told that staff is in communication with youth baseball officials about alternative sites for games that will be displaced by ballfield renovations at Bachmann Park. Severe Weather Consequences In College Station

The city of College Station shares on social media, consequences of Thursday’s (May 16) flooding rains. Storm damage resulted in closing South Dowling Road between Koppe Bridge and I&GN Roads until emergency repairs are completed. And city residents who lost trash containers are asked to look for them before asking for a replacement. City officials say the containers, which have addresses stenciled, could have floated away by flooding rains and/or been blown away. Neighbors who find stray containers are asked to return them to their home. The National Weather Service recorded wind gusts at Easterwood Airport during Thursday’s storms as high as 49 miles per hour and total rainfall of 3.31 inches. WTAW listeners texted (979-695-1620) on Friday the following rain gauge amounts from Thursday’s storms: 6.41 inches in College Station’s Raintree neighborhood. 5.5 inches NNW of Easterwood Airport. 5 inches in Bryan’s Wheeler Ridge neighborhood. 5 inches in Snook. 3.5 inches in the 7-11 Ranch area south of College Station. 3.34 inches in the Cross community of Grimes County. 3 inches in College Station’s Great Oaks Estates neighborhood. Reports received as of 6 p.m. Thursday: 5.59 inches in two hours east of Bryan in the Steep Hollow area at FM 1179 and Merka Road. 5 inches in Bryan’s Memorial Forest neighborhood. 4.26 inches in Bryan’s historic eastside district. 3.5 inches three miles north of Anderson. 1.3 inches east of Hearne in the Blackjack community.

TxDOT Bryan District Updates On Two Highway Projects In College Station

The Texas Department of Transportation’s Bryan district office announces two traffic advisories. Sunday and Monday (May 19 & 20) soil testing around the intersection of Wellborn Road and George Bush Drive involves lane closures at various times. Starting Tuesday (May 21) is a series of traffic changes in the construction zone on Harvey Mitchell Parkway that will take the rest of the month to complete. The week of May 21, existing crossovers will be closed, and new U-turn lanes will open at FM 2818 and George Bush, Luther, and Holleman. The following Tuesday (May 28), traffic on 2818 between FM 60 and F&B Road will move to their final configuration. TxDOT news release about soil testing at Wellborn Road and George Bush Drive: Geotechnical investigative efforts for the FM 2154 (Wellborn Road) and FM 2347 (George Bush Drive) Intersection Project have been rescheduled and are expected to begin, Sunday, May 19, 2024. This work is anticipated to be completed on Monday, May 20, 2024. More information about the project can be found on www.txdot.gov, keyword search, “FM 2347 George Bush Drive Interchange.” This notice advises the public that work at the location will require lane closures. TxDOT encourages drivers to plan for extra travel time through this area or to seek alternate routes. TxDOT news release about traffic pattern changes in the FM 2818 construction zone: The ongoing Harvey Mitchell Parkway (FM 2818) improvement project has reached another construction milestone which will result in a change to traffic patterns. Next week, the intersections will undergo a change in operations where the existing crossovers will be closed and new signalized median u-turn lanes will be opened, to the north and south of each intersection. All left-turns and through traffic on the side streets of George Bush, Luther and Holleman will be prohibited. Instead, all traffic movements that previously used the crossovers, will now use the new median u-turns to cross FM 2818 or change direction. This will be the last interim switch prior to the final configuration later this summer. The necessary changes will be accomplished during the overnight hours of 7:30PM and 6:00AM each night and will begin, weather permitting, the evening of Tuesday, May 21, 2024. Work for this traffic pattern change is anticipated to be completed by the morning of Friday, May 24, 2024. This schedule will be adjusted, if necessary, to ensure driver and worker safety. The following week, during the same overnight hours, 7:30PM and 6:00AM, Tuesday evening, May 28, 2024, and completing by Friday morning, May 31, 2024, the northbound and southbound lanes from University Drive (FM 60) to F&B Road will be switched to their final configuration and other striping adjustments made throughout the project for the next construction phase. Drivers should avoid travel in this area, if possible, during these time periods. Those who must travel through the work zone should expect delays and intermittent traffic stoppages as crews adjust traffic devices, modify lane striping, and make certain the route is ready to be opened to traffic.
