15 months since financial problems were announced, United Way of the Brazos Valley (UWBV) is on its way back.
New UWBW President Andy Martin announced Thursday United Way agencies will be splitting an additional $50,000 dollars due to a combination of increased giving and decreased expenses.
Martin also says the state employee charitable campaign generated an increase of more than 13 percent over last year. He says the increase of $50,000 “is really unheard of in operational campaigns like this.”

As part of its Community Campaign, United Way partners with business and organizations to run employee workplace giving campaigns at over 150 companies in the seven-county region. United Way is pleased to announce that the Brazos Valley community will be able to invest over $350,000 for Community Impact funds. United Way board prioritized an additional $63,194 in Community Impact funds for the Financial Fitness Center, early childhood education resources and information and referral with 2-1-1 Texas.
United Way is also the local campaign manager of the annual State Employee Charitable Campaign (SECC) which allows state employees to designate their gift to an approved charity. Designations in 2012 were over $500,000 which is an increase of 13.4% over last year, with 62% of those funds going to 23 local charities.
Thanks to the leadership of Doug French, board treasurer and Finance Committee Chair, staff and volunteers have successfully implemented new financial management systems and processes. French said, “In an effort to respond to recent questions, United Way wanted to be the best possible steward of the limited community resources in 2013. This year’s budget was conservative in projecting the amount of pledges that might be received. In the end, we were able to raise additional funds while outperforming our budgeted projections for revenue received and overhead expenses.”
In August of 2012, United Way notified its funded partner agencies regarding their Community Impact Grant Awards for 2013. The first payment was made on August 15, 2012 and all subsequent payments have been paid on or before the 15th of each month. The funding cycle will end on June 30, 2013 with the final payment being made on or before July 15, 2013.
United Way will make an additional investment of $50,000 to our funded partners based on 2013 priority percentages from Community Impact Awards. In June of 2012, the families of Tim Bryan and Travis B. Bryan, III, offered a fundraising opportunity through which donations would be matched dollar for dollar up to $50,000 in 2012 plus an additional $50,000 match for 2013. Our funded partners receive 100% of the funds raised with no administration fee.
