U.S. Wins Opener of Women’s World Cup

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) _ The U.S. has won the opener of its Women’s World Cup schedule.

Megan Rapinoe scored twice and Christen Press provided the game-winner as the Americans beat Australia 3-1 in Winnipeg. Press put the U.S. ahead for good in the 61st minute and Rapinoe added her 31st international goal in the 78th.

U.S. star forward Alex Morgan didn’t start as she continues to recover from a bone bruise in her left knee. She entered in the 79th minute, her first game action since April 11.

The United States next plays Sweden on Friday. The Swedes earned a 3-3 tie with Nigeria earlier Monday.
