Tyra Gittens finishes fifth in long jump at World University Games

NAPOLI, Italy – A leap of 20 feet, 10.75 inches placed Texas A&M’s Tyra Gittens fifth in the long jump final at the World University Games on Tuesday.

Representing Trinidad & Tobago, Gittens matched the same mark for fourth place as Susana Hernandez of Mexico also produced a distance of 20-10 ¾ (6.37). A better second jump in her series gave Hernandez the edge over Gittens.

The medal positions went to Maryna Bekh-Romanchuk of Ukraine (22-5 ¼ | 6.84), Evelise Tavares Da Veiga of Portugal (21-8 ¼ | 6.61), and Florentina Costina Iusco of Romania (21-6 | 6.55).

In the qualification round on Monday, Gittens advanced to the final with a mark of 20-7 1/4 (6.28) to place fifth in her group and eighth overall. A total of 12 jumpers advanced to the final.

Gittens will also compete in the high jump later this week as qualification takes place on Thursday with the final on Saturday.
