TYC Ombudsman Resigns

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) _ An independent ombudsman for the Texas Youth Commission is quitting, effective Sept. 1.

John Moore of Denison earlier this month notified the TYC of his decision, saying he has another job offer.

Four advocacy groups on Monday submitted a formal complaint to the Justice Department. The complaint from Texas Appleseed, Advocacy Inc., the Center for Public Representation and the National Center for Youth Law alleges that widespread abuse continues in the juvenile prison system.

State Rep. Jerry Madden of Plano says he spoke with Moore a couple of weeks ago and does not think the complaint led to the ombudsman’s resignation, dated Aug. 9.

Gov. Rick Perry in March appointed Moore, who is a former Texas trooper, ex-Amarillo police officer and retired U.S. marshal.
