CAMPBELLTON, Texas (AP) _ A crowded bus carrying young families and spring breakers toward Mexico went careening off a Texas highway and flipped onto its side Tuesday.
Two passengers died, and dozens of bloodied people climbed through broken windows to safety. In all, 40 people were injured. Two remained in critical condition Tuesday night. Thirteen more were hospitalized in stable condition.
The Americanos USA bus left San Antonio with 42 people and was headed to the Mexican border city of Matamoros, with planned stops in Falfurrias and McAllen, Texas.
About 45 miles south of San Antonio on Interstate 37, the driver heard a loud noise before the bus veered from the right lane. It spun toward the grassy median and landed on its right side.
A Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman says a male and female passenger were killed. He declined to give their names or ages.
