Two Charged in Houston Cop Killing

HOUSTON (AP) _ Two suspects are facing capital murder charges in the killing of an undercover officer during a shootout that also claimed the alleged gunman’s life.

The Harris County District Attorney’s office said in a statement last night that 41-year-old Andres Nava-Maldonado, of Mexico, and 36-year-old Xiomara Mendez-Rosales, of Honduras, had been charged for 42-year-old Officer Henry Canales’s death.

The suspects’ immigration status is under investigation.

Authorities say Canales, a Houston police officer since 1993, was shot Tuesday night while in the parking lot of a drug store during an investigation of the sale of stolen televisions.

A juvenile female was also arrested.

The dead gunman was identified as 37-year-old Roberto Pedroza Carrillo who was shot by another officer.
