While candidates are filing for office in this November’s election, interest has already started in local races for next year.
The most activity involves the decision by Justice of the Peace George Boyett that he won’t seek re-election. The Precinct 3 JP has held that position since 1989.
Three people have notified the county clerk’s office they have appointed campaign treasurers for Boyett’s post. They are Rick Vessell, Rick Hill, and Mickey Posey.
Two other incumbents have also appointed campaign treasurers for next year, Precinct 2 Constable Donald Lampo and County Clerk Karen McQueen.
The filing period for the 2014 primary starts November 9.
Boyett becomes the second judge to decide to retire next year, joining 85th District Court Judge J.D. Langley. Local attorney Kyle Hawthorne has announced he will seek that position.
