NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas (AP) _ Some tubers packing the popular Comal River over the weekend say the experience is being tainted by trash in the river.
A recent report from the city of New Braunfels backs that up, showing litter is up 438 percent from last year and 356 percent over 2012.
A so-called anti-litter “can ban” that prohibited tubers from carrying beer and other throw-away food and beverage containers within city limits was in effect those years.
But a judge earlier this year, acting on a lawsuit filed by tubing and tourism firms, found the prohibition unconstitutional and ordered the city not enforce it.
The New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung reports (http://bit.ly/TYpbnH ) divers over the Memorial Day weekend recovered 242 pounds of trash. Last year on the same weekend, the haul was 45 pounds.
