Trial Set for Nurse Accused of Killing Mom, Kidnapping Baby

CONROE, Texas (AP) _ A trial date has been set for a Houston woman accused of killing a mother and abducting her newborn son.

The Montgomery County district attorney’s office said Thursday that Verna McClain’s trial has been set for Oct. 8.

A grand jury earlier this week indicted McClain on a capital murder charge for the April 17 slaying.

Prosecutors have not decided if they will seek the death penalty against the 31-year-old licensed vocational nurse. McClain remains jailed without bond in Conroe.

McClain is accused of fatally shooting Kala Golden-Schuchardt outside a pediatric clinic in suburban Houston and taking her days-old son. The baby was found safe with a relative of McClain.

Investigators say McClain had a miscarriage and was desperate to find a baby to pass off as her own.
